Revitalized Daniil Medvedev Wins First Trophy in Nearly 30 Months
19 of Medvedev's twenty-one victories have been earned on hardcourt
A resurgent Daniil Medvedev won his maiden championship for 882 days with a win over Corentin Moutet in the Almaty Open title decider.
Medvedev, a former top-ranked player, has endured a challenging year, managing just one win at the big events and suffering a meltdown at the US Open.
The player's varied form on the professional circuit - and issues with his service game in especial - caused him falling of the top ten and eventually splitting with former trainer Cervara.
Currently training with Johansson and Goetzke, the tennis star has gradually advanced in the past month - peaking in a hard-fought 7-5 4-6 6-3 win over challenger Corentin Moutet.
It is the player's initial title after the Italian tournament and first on a hardcourt from March of the previous year.
Success also indicates the Russian has achieved twenty-one titles at twenty-one various competitions.
"For the first time I have attended a event with my two daughters at once, so to win a championship is really nice," stated world number 14 Medvedev.
"This title is in tribute of my younger daughter my daughter, because the maiden victory I achieved when my first daughter her name was born was for her."
Medvedev, the past champion, had lost his last six championship matches, featuring in Halle in the past months.
The player's counter-punching strategy and recurring reactions on the tennis court had prompted commentators to doubt if his skill to play at the highest level was finished.
Yet the 29-year-old has made changes in recent weeks, striving to approach the net and compete positively, supported by an improved service.
Medvedev came back from a disadvantage in the opening set against the tricky Moutet, securing four of the final five points to gain the advantage.
The pair exchanged service breaks in the second set before the Frenchman, striving for his initial ATP Tour victory, seized the initiative to force a third set.
Moutet saved four early-game opportunities in a close third set before the champion broke to that score to serve for the match.
Fittingly, the winner secured victory with a rally at the net, with Moutet incapable to control a volley after a lengthy match.
