Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Major Role in the Ashes

Test match action

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

The Australian chief selector George Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that Cummins might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest set to start on November 21 in Perth.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about his chances of being involved.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations at play, not just the physical problem, but additional elements," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a significant role. With luck starting in Perth. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of recurring issues, with recurrences in multiple past seasons forcing him out of three Australian summers in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against India as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and stated that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the opening match as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs anyway. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
