McDonald's has taken down a holiday advert produced using Artificial Intelligence after encountering significant public disapproval.

The short film was produced using AI video tools and was first released publicly for the Dutch branch of McDonald's on 6 December.

Audience Criticism and Removal

Following its publication, audiences online lambasted the implementation of AI in the commercial. Several described it as "disturbing" and "poorly edited".

"This incident is an key lesson as we examine the effective utilization of Artificial Intelligence," commented a representative from the company.

The advert was developed for the brand by Dutch agency TBWA\Neboko and US firm The Sweetshop. It depicted a series of situations that often go badly during the Christmas break, under the slogan "not the most wonderful time of the year".

A Growing Movement of AI in Advertising

Adverts that feature AI-created content have emerged as a growing phenomenon among large companies, notably for the Christmas campaign season.

  • Another beverage giant has recently released consecutive AI-generated Christmas ads.
  • Technical Challenges: As videos made with current AI video tools are susceptible to become unstable the longer they run, the majority of such clips tend to be only six to 10 seconds in length.
  • Broader Implications: The ad also provoked worries about automation in the production sector, with some critics stating it could affect work for production staff.

Defense from the Creators

Following the ad being taken down, The Sweetshop's head, Melanie Bridge, defended the project.

Bridge claimed, the development took "over a month and a half" and involved generating "countless iterations" which were then edited afterward "just as we would on any standard production".

"This wasn't just an experiment," Bridge asserted. "We consider it a finished piece."

Mixed Audience Sentiment

While the Dutch McDonald's commercial was largely panned, the reception for other AI-generated holiday ads has been more mixed.

For instance, a consecutive AI-generated holiday spot from Coca-Cola reportedly garnered a significant "positive feedback" from viewers.

However, various brands have likewise received criticism for using AI in advertising. Luxury brand Valentino, for example, was criticized for advertisements that some called "cheap" and "uncanny".

The episode illustrates the evolving discussion within the marketing and production industries about the balance between new tools and audience reception.
