European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States
The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
