Coordinated UK-French Airstrike Targets Daesh Arms Cache in the Syrian region
British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.
The location, identified by surveillance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was situated in mountainous terrain just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.
"Our fighter planes used Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a several approach shafts providing entry to the site... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.
There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the operation late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the ministry further stated.
The British jets were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
IS - alternatively referred to as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over parts of Iraq and Syria until 2019.
"This operation demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to work closely with our partners, to stamp out any re-emergence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey remarked.
RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.
"I extend gratitude to all the members of our armed forces involved in this strike for their expertise and their valour," Healey commented. "Including them were a great many British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to eliminate militants who threaten our security, highlights how UK forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure at home and powerful internationally."
Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it described as a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.
The United Nations estimates Daesh still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand militants in both countries.
